How did/will you adjust to the new normal way of education given that you are under a medical course?

COVID-19 has significantly altered the way global education is delivered. Millions of students were impacted by educational institution closures as a result of the pandemic, resulting in the largest online movement in education history. With the sudden shift away from classrooms in many parts of the world, universities had to quickly switch to virtual and digital strategies. Many of us have suddenly been forced to adjust to a ‘new normal way of the education system’. Medical students in the Philippines confronted several interrelated barriers as they tried to adapt to online learning. The most common issues were difficulties adjusting learning styles, having to perform responsibilities at home, and poor communication between educators and learners.

As a student in a medical course, it would be very difficult to adopt the new normal way of education as there would be activities that are needed to be done with the class instructors in the laboratory classes. This online learning presents us with a significant challenge in understanding the necessary discussion by learning it more thoroughly with limited assistance from class instructors. It was very difficult since we are so used to the standard way of going to school, Others are having difficulties with their internet connection, while others cannot fully understand the lessons. It will take a while to fully adjust to the new normal. So let’s make or do a step or action to cope with this situation.

“We have to look at this by putting in perspective that to win the war against COVID-19 we need to make sacrifices and develop a coping mindset.” According to Dr. Robert Leahy, an attending psychologist at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the author of The Worry Cure.

Let us apply the statement given by Dr. Leahy as we know that we can face and surpass this crisis with the help of our positive perspective for the good of everyone.

One of the most important things we can do is accept that a new reality should come with a different level of expectations. We must not always complain about the new learning system, as we are not the only ones who feel the hardness of it. Students must find a way in order to still learn and have knowledge. Students must focus on the positive side.

Methods of coping can be problem-solving, sharing things, cheering people on, learning from the experience, reevaluating priorities, and reflecting on how people coped with far worse in the past. Be available and flexible. Trust the process. Always find a possible way of taking action in every possible case.

Every student is encouraged to find practices that work best for their time management and adjustments, but always remember to take breaks to avoid stress and burn-out. All learners could possibly win these battles, so never give up and continue reaching our goals and purposes in life. We can do this.
